Unexplained Absences – new legislation

As you know, we already have very strict guidelines when it comes to recording absences. This is why we need to ask parents to sign in late and sign out early slips. This is why we need to have the reason for absences recorded. These administrative tasks are audited and schools take this very seriously. The idea behind it all is of course to reduce the number of unnecessary days from school and for the safety of children’s whereabouts.

The new part to this is that schools are now required to phone parents immediately when there is an unexplained absence. This will mean that, on the morning of the student not fronting up to school, the office will need to ring the parent or guardian. As you could imagine, this places an added level of work and compliance to the office. We have always asked parents to provide the reason for an absence, but now it is critical that parents are on the front foot and make contact with the office or teacher before 9:15am. We have made this very easy at St James with the Class Dojo phone app, so parents can very quickly get a Dojo message to their teacher. If the teacher receives this message in a timely manner, the student will be marked with an explained reason before the office needs to make the call. You can of course ring the school, mention it in person, email to office@stjamesnng.catholic.edu.au or send a written note with a sibling – as long as we have notification of some sort that also explains the absence (sick, specialist appointment etc).
